PORT MONMOUTH, NEW JERSEY. On Wednesday, February 5th, Bridge of Books Foundation joined Port Monmouth Elementary School in Port Monmouth, New Jersey to hold a World Read Aloud Day celebration event that included several group readings and the donation of more than 720 books to nearly 200 kindergarten through fifth grade students.

“Bridge of Books Foundation has been instrumental, not only in giving our students books, but in giving them choice, which is crucial to boosting their intrinsic motivation,” said Colleen O’Neill, Port Monmouth Elementary School Reading Specialist. “Our students left the book tables with big smiles and were motivated to begin reading right away. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Founded in 2010, World Read Aloud Day is an annual advocacy day presented by global literacy nonprofit LitWorld and sponsored by Scholastic, to unite people around the world by highlighting the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories. Over the last ten years, World Read Aloud Day has evolved into a global movement of millions of readers, writers, and listeners from communities all across the world coming together to honor the joy and power of reading and sharing stories, and continue expanding the definition and scope of global literacy.

“World Read Aloud Day presented another important opportunity for Bridge of Books Foundation to work with a local elementary school to distribute donated books to children in need,” commented Bridge of Books Foundation Founder and Executive Director Abby Daly. “We are very thankful for the faculty and students at Port Monmouth Elementary for making the day such a huge success.”
